Don't ever get Diamond videocard. XFree86 actively discourage people
from buying their products. By the way, I use Diamond Speedstar (ET4000)
without too much trouble.

Yup. You can setup SLIP. If SLIP isn't supported, there is an alternative.
There is a program called term, which is SLIP emulator. It does almost
everything you do with SLIP. You can telnet out of linux box, others can
telnet in, can do anonymous ftp to your favorite site from linux directly.
