Try this in your .profile:

HOST=`hostname`
export HOST=${HOST%.austin.ibm.com} (or whatever your domain is)

and then use $HOST in your prompt. I have not tried this on my Linux
system under bash, but it is what I use at work under ksh, and it works
fine there. Bash is close enough that it should work for you, too.
