In the world of the lowly DOS, there is a vast amount of packet drivers

Right, and they even use the GNU GPL.
Could anybody explain why it is not possible to port packet drivers
to linux ? IMHO, most of the driver source code belongs to the
net guru R. Nelson of Crynwr, will he allow porting attempts ?
One advantage of selecting GPL'ed code to run on your computer is
that you don't have to care what I think; you just have to abide by
the copyright. Linus is in the same position as me.
This could speed up the availability of network card drivers in
insane speed...
Well, it's a cool idea (I had it first!! It's mine, all mine!!), but
there are several problems in porting the Crynwr packet driver
collection: 1) it's written in DOS assembly language, 2) it assumes
real mode, and 3) in general, the transmit routine assumes that it
can block.

Crynwr Software Crynwr Software sells packet driver support.
