Subject: Compiling X apps under SLS and gcc

I have recently installed SLS linux including X386 on my machine, and I wanted
to compile some usefull X apps on it. All the apps I tried had previously
compiled using cc under sunOS, and despite using xmkmf I was finding
considerable difficulty getting anything to compile - I get masses of warnings
about uncast pointer assignments, and quite often the compile fails due
to uninitialised variables etc. Is this normal - can I fix it .
