In either case, you'll probably want some swap space, which means more
hard drive. Of course, hard drive space is much cheaper than RAM. I'd
recommend 4 MB as a practical minimum of memory, accompanied by 4-8 MB
of swap space.

Actually, you can run X with a Hercules compatible monochrome card,
although it's not too pretty. If you're not going to run X, you might
as well buy only a monochrome card & monitor, because text is more
readable on a good amber screen than on most VGA monitors.

Only, of course, if you plan on running X. Also, do not get a three
button microsoft mouse, as the middle button isn't supported under X.
Most cheap mice have a switch that changes from Microsoft to Mouse
Systems, which should be okay.
