To be precise, they are security holes. On Sys V, you have to be
superuser for using an alternate namelist, whereas BSD allows any user
to use their own symbol table. (As far as I know, I once asked about
that in comp.unix.wizards.)

The general opinion about it was: Oh boy, no hacker would exploit that,
there are n easier ways to crack a unix box ... :(
