Subject: Remote logins keep freezing up on me... can you help?
Date: 30 Jan 1993 03:25:41 GMT

Ok, here is a problem that I can finally detail just a little bit more
than I could before. I thought it might have something to do with the
TCP/IP stuff, but now I don't know. It could be a problem with getty
or something like that... see what you think...

Well, I just telnetted into Linux from a remote location. It froze up
just before I got my unix prompt (about half way through the /etc/motd
file). Even though I was frozen, I tried the following commands:

cat > test_file
blah blah blah blah
blah
Control-D <=== this terminated the file
clear <=== would normally clear the screen, but not this time
Control-D <=== logs me out only after I press a return key

Well, I logged back into my account after I got off and low and behold,
there was a file in my home directory called "test_file" that had the
two lines of blahs in it. This indicates that maybe my display was
the only thing that "froze", but still leaving me with the power of
doing what I wanted.

I have SLS 1.0 (just before the gzip days) and have been plagued with
this freezing up for quite a long time now. I had always thought that
it was a net problem, but I never checked it out... I just closed the
connection and tried to get back in. Also, this problem seems to be
only apparent when logging into the system remotely, and is not a
problem when telnetting out of the system.

Could anyone help me with this? I would appreciate it greatly!

Scott
