Not so!
Just thought i should let you know that i am at this very moment running
a Diamond Stealth in 1024x768 @70Hz NI, and it is quite nice. Use the standard
VESA modes supplied with the XS3 server, and clocks 25 40 75 for modes
640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 (i.e. 60,60, and 70Hz for these modes
respectively). The catch is that on first boot-up of your machine (NOT
on ctrl-alt-del, but only on a cold boot) you need to go into DOS and run
the SMODE.COM program that came with the card. Go to your monitor setting
option and set the monitor into these three modes in the order given above.
(Do not set the 1280x1024, you can't use this mode anyway as the server does
not support it.) Now reboot into linux. After doing startx, you should be
in 640x480 mode. ctrl-alt-+ once, and you either get 800x600 OK or garbage,
but not to worry. ctrl-alt-+ again, and you should be in smooth 1024x768.
Let me know if this does not work. As long as you do not cold boot the machine
too often, this is not too annoying. (And much cheaper than buying a new
card!) For some reason you have to put the card into the crappy 800x600 mode
before the 1024, or the latter mode does not seem to work.
