Hello out there. First of all, let me say that I've been a user of commercial
SVR4 for almost a year. I wanted to learn about Unix and experiment with
X Windows, so I bought an inexpensive SVR4 system (about $500) and have been
pleased with it.
Then, my video card died and I bought a new EISA VGA card. SVR4, which
apparently does some serious messing with the hardware upon bootup, now
dies right after loading the kernel and clearing the screen. My SVR4
vendor is looking into the problem, but who knows how long it'll take or
whether they'll come up with a fix. In the meantime, I decided to give
Linux a try.
Hardware: EISA 486/33 w/8MB RAM, SiS chipset
ISA ESDI disk subsystem
EISA VGA/ET4000 adapter (new -- causes SVR4 to die at bootup)
Archive XL QIC-80 floppy tape drive
ProAudioSpectrum/16
Logitech Serial Mouse
Software: SLS 0.99p2 (abc) + kernel patch 3 + kernel patch 4
XFree86 1.1
lilo 0.8p1
tcsh 6.03
procps-0.4
(using 16MB swap and 200MB efs root partitions)
I've never been so pleasantly surprised! Everything just worked. I can
hardly believe it -- all the visible features of SVR4, and a lean/mean
250KB kernel to boot! Thank you Linus, Peter, and everyone working to
make Linux just about the best OS ever! I'm thinking of switching to Linux
permanently.
Questions:
1. I still don't understand the difference between classic and jump shared
libraries. Why is it when I use "ldd", some programs say "Jump 4.2"
and others say "Jump 4.1". Is it really necessary to have both on line?
what is the difference between the files "libc.a" and "libc.ca"? How
do I specify which version of the library (static, classic, jump, etc.)
to link a program with?
2. There's no "pwd" program. I use "tcsh", which has no "pwd" built-in, so
could someone tell me where I could get sources for "pwd"?
3. Since I patched the kernel, top crashes. Where can I get an updated
version?
Thanks in advance to all who reply!
