   Hi,
I'm a new Linux user. I have recently got and installed the SLS 0.99.2
release, seemingly perfectly smoothly, onto my laptop.

It is a 386sx--25 MHz (sold by a company called Olympic)
          4M RAM
          Cirrus GD610/620 VGA Controller -- 256K
--will support 800x600x16 display (or 640x480x16)
          80M HDD
640x480 x 32 level Gray scale VGA Liquid Crystal Display

I also frequently attach it to a
         Mutli-sync 15" monitor
         (Forefront MTS-9557)
(should display 1024x768x256ni, given a suitable video card)

Using the X stuff in the SLS package I have X working in mono
in 640x480 resolution (virtual 800x600). The clock speeds of the
vid card seem to be: 25 28 , using the "startx 2> clocks.X" technique.
I don't seem to be able to get 800x600x2 -- I get messages back
telling me that I don't have an appropriate clock speed for this
  resolution.

I would like to get X in working colour, and preferably have the
choice of getting a resolution of 800x600. It seems from the
FAQ that Xega should provide a solution to (some?) of my problems.

Now for the sequence of increasingly naive questions.

   1) Will Xega work with the release of X11 which comes with SLS.99.2?

   2) Does it matter that the version of gcc with SLS.99.2 is v2.3.3
      rather than v2.2.2

   3) I'm looking at the FAQ (right now!) I understand the bit about
exporting the variable, and I've successfully grabed the stuff at
pub/Linux/ALPHA/Xega/X386.ega.T.Z from the mirror of tsx-11-mirror
at src.doc.ic.ac.uk ... but ... what am I supposed to do
      with it all.

Apologies for posting such presumably obvious qs. -- I'm afraid
I just don't see the answers in the FAQ. (P'rhaps I'm not looking
in the right place -- or just right..)

Any help would be really appreciated.

As Xega doesn't seem to be a big topic in the newsgroup perhaps
anyone kind enough to help me should email me -- then I can post
a summary to the 'group if there is any other interest.
