Thanks to Dave and everyone else who told me about make config. This
fixed the problem. With regard to the manual - I was actually following
the network installation guide in the FAQs, which doesn't mention
this step. Since that first network installation is a stage that
many beginners go through, maybe some kind soul could update it.
