The packages used to be tar'ed and compressed and had the extension '.taz'.
But now they seem to be tar'ed and gzip'ed, now having the extension '.tpz'.

So until we can get hold of gzip (uncompressed) then we seem to be a bit
   stuck.

gzip comes on the A-disk set. However, an old A1 disk had a problem
with the instalation program - it looked at a '.tzp' suffix, while all
packages were given a '.tpz' suffix.

Hey presto - no packages to install!

Try a new a1/a2 set to install the rest of the distribution.

I have tried using DOS's PKUNZIP to decompress the packages, but with no
   positive effect whatsoever.

Apparently, the Gnu zip format is different to the PK one. Why, I
don't know. Presumably for better compression rates.
