I've finally got it working, but I needed more than just Xconfig.
In addition I needed a driver for the 8514a. It replaced the X
executable in /usr/bin/X11. Now it works quite fine. If you have
not replaced any executables, which videocard have you set up
in the Xconfig file?

BTW: A lot of thanks to all the people responding. You were all very
helpful in helping me getting the grips of X!
