Some telnet/ftp daemons perform an RFC 931 reverse lookup to
find out who is connecting to them. If the remote machine
(the Linux box, here) doesn't run an RFC 931 server, the daemon
will time out before giving up. This can give the appearance of
a hang up. Worse, certain other problems are also seen with RFC 931
sometimes (although usually associated with packet filtering) and
these can cause real hang ups.
This may not be the problem here, but it might be worth considering.
