Hi all, I finally got around to installing linux. here's my stats:
80386/33 AMD
80387 Cyrix
AMI bios
1.44, 1.2 meg floppy
WD2200 210 meg IDE on generic adapter
Realtek vga w/256k
Zenith ZCM-1490-Z vga monitor (I get only 640x420 bbecause of 256k in dos)
Colorado jumbo 250 internal tape drive (off floppy cable)
Mitsumi CD-ROM
8megs ram
Linux 0.98 pl5 SLS release, full system installed
While installing (I made one huge exfs) all went fine until disk b5, where
I got the following error:
tar:Could not create symlink to /user/bin/smaildone
the installation was not interrupted though, It continued to completion.
How do I add a user? I've followed the FAQ and although I edit /etc/passwd
with vi and save itand then create a home directory, I can't chown the
directory. I get a "mynewuser is not a valid user"????
Also: can I run X with my setup? (ie my 256k realtek vga card and zenith
monitor which maxes out at 800x600 if I had more vga memory)
And if so how do I go about doing it? I can't figure it out from
the FAQ.
Thanx in advance. pinhc@cunyvm.cuny.edu
