Subject: How do Linux printer drivers work?
Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1993 12:51:06 GMT

I would like to know a little bit about how Linux printer drivers
work before I put together my final system to run Linux. A 300 dpi
page takes a little over 1MB to map out. Does the printer driver
grab a MB of real or virtual memory from my machine and do the work
there, or do I _have_ to have a lot of RAM in my printer? I know
that the Apple Stylewriter has no RAM, and the the Mac just draws
parts of the page in its own memory, then sends them out.

The point is that I want to buy an inexpensive printer for the Linux
system which I am putting together, as long as it is at least
300x300 dpi and can handle at least 3-4 ppm. Please give me as
much technical information on the drivers as you can -- I am a
former Minix kernel hacker, and am not afraid of the tech stuff.
