It tries to provide much the same functionality without slip's
overhead, and while running entirely in user space. We don't have SLIP
dialins here, and the line noise on my modem is appalling, so.. term
resulted.

It can do this, yes. This is pretty much a side effect. What it's
original intention was was to provide multiplexed error-corrected
compressed streams over the single modem. The various clients to allow
remote logins, and remote X, and local logins etc, and just side
effects.
