Subject: [Q] New to Linux; Can't get X-windows started
Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1993 20:11:02 GMT

I just started using Linux (0.98pl5) and have had good luck with it so
far; but I'm having problems running X-Windows. I read through the FAQ
but still can't get it to work. I have a 486DX-40, 5meg RAM, Trident VGA
card (512K), 105 meg IDE, and a Zeos VGA monitor.
Do I have enough RAM to get X-Windows running? Is my VGA card "good
enough" or do I need more memory on it? Do I need more swap space (and
how do I change it)?
At first, I got some error messages, but after editing the Xconfig
file (that came with the distribution), I don't get those errors anymore,
but the screen goes blank. I can type stuff (say, ls > /dev/lp1) and it
works, but I can't see it. I also checked the /etc/termcap file to make
sure everything is there. Anyone have clues? Please help..! Thanks
to all in advance!
