I don't think my first post got through...
I recommended to people ( who know what they are doing) to check out
"depot", which was mentioned in an earlier article in this thread.
I found "depot.ps.Z" on unix1.andrew.cmu.edu, plus a version of depot
dated approx Dec. 23.
It appears from the docs that it does all that I have seen proposed here.
