Not to mention being able to quick&dirty it by cat'ing files in /proc :-)
(see the "free" program in the /proc-based ps distribution)

I spent half the day today trying to find the kernel definition for
/dev/proc before finally looking for the mount() syscall and discovering
that some filesystem types (like /proc) ignore the device argument :-)
