How about having a group of people getting a directory in an archive
and setting up a kind of a standard source/binary tree?

386BSD has a wonderful example of this (try telnetting to ref.tfs.com)
It's a 386BSD machine on the net, you can actually use it for
browsing around and seeing what a wonderful thing a PC-*ix is.
Having something like that for linux would, in my opinion,
be a BIG win. You can compile a new kernel there (if your machine
or harddisk is slow, there are plenty of ready-made ones,
just about all the ported packages are installed there, etc. etc.)
Now, who with an admin access to the net will volunteer their
machine for this? If there's a machine, I'm volunteering to be
an assistant administrator.
