Subject: Hardware question, KFC 17" and Diamond Speedstar 24x
Date: 28 Feb 1993 17:04:26 GMT

I have a chance at buying a KFC 17" monitor and a Diamond Speedstar 24X card
semi cheap. And was hoping for some input before my decision has to be made
(approx 7th of March) Right now I have a trident 8900 with 1 meg of ram and a
14" NI CTX monitor...I have currently been unable to get Xwindows working so
an added bonus of switching would be maybe succedding (sp) getting Xwindows
working if hardware is the problem (Half of my suspicions go to my hardware
and the rest to my own ignorance and inexperience). I realize that the
speedstar 24x card most likely will kill that hope by the way so I'm asking
for confirmation on that point, alternatly I could buy ATI...

To recap my rambling questions...

1) I have looked in the hardware compat list and seen the KFC 15" monitor
listed. Does anyone have comments about KFC monitors? And does anyone have
experience with the KFC 17"? Nice monitor? Can I use it with Xwindows, do
you have specific information to help me do this? The hardware listing I had
didn't have any notes next to the listing for the KFC 15" I'm assumming that
if I'm willing to settle for no Xwindows I can still run the kernal......Do
you think that my chances at Xwindows are better if I spring for extra
100-150 bucks and get an ATI card? (hardware problem wise)

2) From the FAQ's I have learned that if you have a Diamond card you cannot
use Xwindows because the company is unfriendly and not shared information
about their chip sets. Does anyone know anything different, i.e. this
information hasn't changed in the last week or for some obscure reason how to
run X through a 24X card is known? (I don't really expect a yes answer but
since I was posting the question about the monitor I figured what the
heck....)

3) Feel free to add any comments about Xwindows or the monitors and cards
mentioned above

4) Please email any responses, if I find anything positive out I will pass on
to the hardware compat. listing..(Besides I only get to glance at the
newsgroup 3 days a week)

Thanx for your help....

(Is it just me or do other inexperienced people have this horribly paranoid
feeling that posting without searching the FAQ's is a sin and you are likely
to get deluged with megs of flamming stupidity mail? Of course considering
the volume that passes through here its sorta kinda justified. ;->)
