If you're installing a version of LILO the first time on a partition,
you also have to include the -i /etc/lilo/boot.b option. This puts
the LILO boot sector on that partition.

There is actually little reason to ever omit that option. (If you
omit it, the map installer loads the existing boot sector from that
partition and tries to use that.)

Note that -i is obsolete and you should use the install variable
in /etc/lilo/config. The easiest way to get such things working is
probably to use QuickInst. (LILO 0.8 and above.)
