From: sperber@midi.midi (Michael Sperber (Mr. Preprocessor)) Subject: Lucid Emacs binaries uploaded Date: 28 Feb 1993 15:57:42
Hi there,
after quite a few requests and some more testing by me and a few
others, I've decided to upload binaries et al of my port of Lucid
Emacs 19.4. Right now, it's in sunsite.unc.edu's /pub/Linux/incoming
directory. Here's the blurb that goes with it:
This is a port of Lucid Emacs 19.4 to Linux .99pl5 with libc 4.3. It
has been tried with both SLS XFree 1.0 and the new XFree 1.2.
The whole thing consists of the following files:
lemacs.z - the executable
lemacs_lisp.tar.z - the Lucid Emacs elisp stuff
lemacs_info.tar.z - dito, the info files
lemacs_etc.tar.z - the etc directory
lemacs_patch.tar.z - patches necessary to compile Lemacs
The original & full lemacs resides on labrea.stanford.edu in
/pub/gnu/lucid.
Recommended installation is to put everything into a /usr/local/lemacs
directory and make symlinks from somewhere in your path to lemacs,
ctags and etags (if you don't have those already). If you use the
mail stuff, you might have to set a few access permissions for
movemail et. al.
Lucid Emacs is a strongly enhanced Emacs that runs only under X (at
least, as of yet). It is based on a prerelease of Emacs 19. That
means: full 8-bit support, full X event support, multiple X windows
(called screens), multiple fonts, pull-down menus, pop-up menus and,
and, and. It also comes with a lot of very useful elisp packages.
It's big, but it's worth it. (Sure more so than Epoch.) If you want
to know more, read etc/NEWS from the etc archive.
Unlike the release of Lemacs 19.2 that's still hanging out on a few
servers, this one has no problems with shared libraries or subshells.
It has been reported to compile and run by a few others, but I don't
have any success reports from people using any of the network
utilities. So if you have a networked Linux machine, I'd appreciate
to hear if GNUS/ange-ftp/RMAIL/vm works/doesn't work/crashes/destroys
your filesystem.
The patches are based on Rick Sladkey's patches to Emacs 18.59. The
s-linux.h file needed some reworking, but a couple of the original
patches could actually be dropped because the Emacs code had already
been corrected. So many thanks to Rick for his work. Even more
thanks go to Eric Youngdale who was extremely patient helping me steer
around libc4.3's problems. I did little more than compile the sucker.
Enjoy!
