I would like to thank all the people who wrote me with their experiences,
successful and unsuccessful, with Maxtor hard drives and Linux.
To summarize:
The problems seemed to be with early versions of the 7213A 213 MB IDE
drive from Maxtor. Basically, the system had big problems when it tried
to access the disk. I don't have specifics.
This problem seems to have been ironed out, but there
also seem to be remaining problems with hard drive error messages
and other things.
Until I have the complete facts about this problem, and what was done
to fix it, and what problems remain, I think I'll just not purchase this
particular model of IDE drive.
