This must have been around libc.2.12c?

There is an xv binary in the directory /pub/Linux/Incoming/DLL-libs
on sunsite.unc.edu. You'll need at least libX.so.3.0, libc.so.4.3, and
libgr.so.1.0 to run it: this last lib is available from the same
directory.

Another note: With the introduction of jumplibs for X11 it is no
longer necessary to make '.a' files: distributing binaries is
ok now!
