Try doing an
rm *.o
before you compile ps.
(Maybe you do need patches as well, I don't know, but the bit about ps giving
the same behaviour sounds like you need to recompile the whole of the ps
sources...I haven't compiled 99p6 yet because it broke the sound patches...)

Even better, turf the kmem-based ps and get Michael Johnson's proc-fs-based
ps (at tsx-11.mit.edu:/pub/linux/BETA/procps/procps-0.5.tar.Z)
 - then you won't have to recompile ps (or even do a ps -U) every time the
kernel changes ;)
