This sounds right to me, too. My first thought was that the
motherboard might be the problem rather than the controller, and this is
a good thing to check.
I also *always* start looking at these problems by putting the video
card in an eight bit slot and being sure the int's are disabled. I've
found a lot of video cards which do interesting things when they
shouldn't, and which behave better in a short slot. I know it's not
likely, but it's something you can test for free.
