I too, suprisingly, have been having FS corruption with BOTH
minix and ext. I had been merrily using 0.99pl5, libc 4.2.
Backup/restore using SCSI tape and cpio/dd has been working
great!
THEN, all about the same time I:

  1) Added tcp/ip.
  2) Added libc 4.3.
  3) Added poe1.11a
  4) Did backup/restore to SCSI tape.
  5) The SECOND time I booted, "fsck" in /etc/rc.local found bad
blocks on my root partition, both restoring to minix and ext.

System: AMI 486/33 ISA Bus (8Mb)
         Adaptec 1542B
         Wangtek 5150ES
         2 MFM drives (40 + 20- don't laugh)

I ALWAYS do "shutdown now" prior to rebooting. I NEVER had file-system
corruption until doing my backup/restore yesterday. My motherboard is
top-of-the-line AMI, my SCSI adapter industry standard with DMA speed
of 5M. Sigh... not much to go on, I know...
