No, that doesn't work. The kernel sees a device file and treats it like
one -- so you just get whatever that major/minor pair correspond to on the
local host.

The NFS protocol, for starters, and then significant portions of the
kernel, I think. As I recall RFS does what you want, but damned if I know
how -- and damned if I can think of any other reason to re-implement it
for linux...
(that's the AT&T RFS, not the ancient history free one from Tektronix)
(hey, there's a strange idea -- anyone ever try dropping the old RFS into
a modern Net-2 or Linux kernel? Did it work?)
