Subject: X386[,mono] problem

*Everytime* I try to run X, it fails. Specifically, if I manually do:
X& #No difference whether X linked to X386 or X386mono
twm&
I end up with X dying with either signal 8 or signal 11. Everything
is fine *UNTIL* I actually try to run an X application. The X server
itself will keep running (apparently) forever, as long as there aren't
any clients. I have only managed to get 2 clients to display a
window. XTerm apparently worked fine, but doc will start loading and
then just stop (ps shows it to be sleeping). xeyes (for instance)
causes X to die immediately.

Config:
0.99p5 w/SCSI-misc and IPC+
4MB RAM
2 ST-296N HD's
ST-01 adapter
ET4000 video card
Color VGA monitor
8MB swap partition
