Subject: Questions about Serial Driver 3.8 in SLS99p5
Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1993 05:25:25 GMT

I need someone to help me on this. I recently download the new SLS package
with Xfree1.2, and I was not able to get the X window working because of
some mouse problems. I have a Microsoft mouse which uses COM2IRQ3, and when
I set it to /dev/mouse or /dev/ttyS1 in the Xconfig file, the X window dies
upon startup. I tried all possible things that I can think of with no
success. Then I found that at the beginning of booting there is some
message saying:
Serial driver version 3.8 with AUTO_IRQ enabled
   ttys1 (IRQ=4) at address 0x02f8 is a 16450
NOW this is very strange. First, I can not find a device ttys1 in /dev(even
though there is a device ttyS1). But address 02f8 IS the address for COM2.
However, COM2 is set to use IRQ3 instead of IRQ4. Moreoever, what is a
"16450"?

Could someone tell me what is going on with serial driver version 3.8? Is
there any bugs in the driver? I do not remember seeing anything about serial
driver during bootup in a older version. Do I need this? If not, how can I
disable it during booting? Thanks a lot.
