There is a sound driver for Linux which supports Midi capabilities of
SB and PAS16. (The SB driver doesn't support input yet). Look at
tsx-11.mit.edu (pub/linux/packages/sound).

The midi api is simple. You can output bytes to the Midi port and
syncronize the output with a timer.
