Did you get the binary release off tsx-11 / sunsite / nic.funet / etc. ?

If you did get all of it, check /usr/local/emacs/etc for a file called
linux.el
~~~~~~~~
chuck it in the lisp/term subdir.
(you may have to call it console.el, i can't remember...)
and that ought to do it...
you shouldn't have to put things in your .emacs file !
PS. if you're after some great elisp files, take a look at
the elisp archive at
archive.cis.ohio-state.edu:/pub/gnu/emacs/elisp-archive
 - you can get stuff to open tar files like a dired buffer,
automatically decompress .Z files (easily modified to use gzip :),
all sorts of groovy stuff...
Enjoy !
