Subject:  GCC files 'not in compressed format' ? help

I have downloaded (some twice), the files in tsx-11.mit.edu /pub/linux/GCC
*.tar.z and I am received error message from compress saying it is not in
compressed format

I have tried uncompressing direct from tar using
tar xvvofz blah.TZ
uncompress blah.tar.Z
compress -d blah.tar.z(Z)

I have downloaded 'larger' versions of both tar and compress to no avail.

I cannot find gzip anywhere.

I have a bunch of files for gcc-2.3.3 and cannot get any to untar.

help would be much appreciated.
