Both a friend of mine and I have an ST-01/ST-02. It will not talk to
the tape drive I have or some disks I have tried. This seems to be related
to a physical problem (Electrical drive capacity, on-board termination, etc.)
and not software, because neither DOS or linux can use them.

I have an Adaptec 1542B at home and the ST-02 at work. I like the
Adaptec a lot more. I don't know if its worth $130 more, but its
a lot better.
