        To follow up to my own posting.

  This happend on linux-0.99p5, GCC-2.3.3, libc.so.4.3, and
XFree86-1.2 while trying to switch back to a VC from the X-server
(still running) using the cntl-alt-F? key stroke. I'm running xdm from
/etc/rc (no doshell needed, and doesn't make a difference as I tried
that to).
