I have recompiled nearly all of the things I use regularly to take advantage
of the -m486 option, including the kernel. Also I got the 486 binaries for
gcc, which _should_ speed up compile times also. The difference wasn't that
noticeable on my machine, there was a much bigger change when installing
the new libc4.2 from 4.1 .
