Subject: Help needed with logging in thru serial
Date: 17 Feb 1993 05:28:17 GMT

Once again, my VGA monitor kicked over and died, so I need to be able
to log into Linux through the serial port. Unfortunately, the setup
I had before doesn't seem to work since I've upgraded Linux.

I get the login prompt OK, I can type in a login, and I get asked for
a password. No problem. But, the login hangs right after I press that
enter key after typin my password. It then sits a while, gets bored,
and resets, asking for a login again.

I'm using a recent version of SLS, 1.0. I don't know the patchlevel
offhand, and it'd be difficult to find out.

The pertinent line in inittab looks something like the following:

c6:6:respawn:/bin/uugetty 9600 ttyS1

I've also tried

c6:6:respawn:/bin/getty 9600 ttyS1

I have a limited amout of time I can use the monitor before its
completely fried, otherwise I'd just hack it myself and make random
changes until it was happy... :-)

As usual, any help would be greatly appreciated. I do use this machine
extensively in my schoolwork...

Thanks,

Tom Cronin
