Oh, my. I wasn't expecting this until tomorrow :-) I might as well
fill people in a little bit - there have been some rather cagey comments over
the past few few weeks regarding this release. There will be more detailed
announcements tomorrow.
First of all, new shared libraries have been prepared based upon the
new X release. They are dynamically linkable, jumptable libraries, and thus in
the future it should be possible to generate new X libraries that will be
binary compatible with the 3.0 release which will be made available tomorrow.
The stuff is all on tsx-11.mit.edu in pub/linux/packages/X11/XFree86-1.2, but
the directory is not publicly readable yet. Orest is not well connected
(network wise) at the moment, and Dirk Hohndel (who generated the X libraries
this time around) is probably in bed by now :-). I do not have the proper
"keys" to unlock this tonight, so you will have to wait until Monday.
Before you will be able to use the new X distribution, you *must*
upgrade to libc-4.3. A new version has been prepared and tested, and I expect
H.J. to release it any time now. The major new feature is the dynamic linking
(which you will not get with old binaries linked to previous versions of
libc-4.n). Also, part of the C++ iostream interface is now available through
the jump table, and there have been a few bugfixes here and there.
Both the X and libc libraries have been tested over the past week or
two, but there may be problems that wider usage will uncover. If you are not
the brave sort of individual, you might wish to wait a week or two to make sure
that problems are not discovered that need to be fixed.
In case anyone had not figured it out, the X release and the new libc
are the reason for the delay in the SLS update.
