Well, even with tons of helpfull responses, linux both in the SLS
distribution and HJ's bootable root disk won't start my system.
Unfortunately, my system is the only 386 or better in sight, e.g.
the school only has 286's. So much for trying the disks elsewhere.
Anyhow let me try to summarize my situation and the problem.
My machine is a Color Protable, Ultra, with a Cyrix 486SLC-25 + Math Co
Processor. I have 8 Mb of RAM and a VGA display in the portable.
The machine has a 200Mb hard disk currently partitioned, 80 DOS, 40
Extended DOS (scratch space), 80 unused - for Linux.
I downloaded the A1-A4 SLS disks from tsx-11.mit.edu using an ethernet
connection on a 286 PC in a lab. I used the rawrite program to write
the disks A1 and A2 out, and the copy command to write out the disks
A3 and A4. When I boot with the A1 disk, everything seems happy till
just after it loads itself into RAM, then it displays the Linux
0.99pl4-61 (root@softland)... message and then nothing happens. I can
switch between the virtual consoles using the left alt key with F1-F8
so that suggests to me that somethings are working while others aren't.
I tried downloading HJ's bootable root image also from tsx-11, it got
slightly further in that it tries to start INIT 2.0, but then it does
nothing as well.
Sigh!
Help! Suggestions, comments, whatever, will be most appreciated.
