I posted a question some time ago about cron, but I might have worded the
question in a funny way, so let me post again and let you know what I see,
and maybe someone more experienced than I can comment. (post it or e-mail).
I am running SLS 0.98 pl5 and wanted to get cron going. I figured out
how crontabs works (I think) and started up crond in my /etc/rc file. When
I log on as root and do a ps command, I do not see crond in the list of
processes. However, it is running!
I know this because I set up two crontabs, one for root and one for
an unprivileged user. Each of the crontabs writes a message into different
directories once a minute. This is working. Why don't I see crond in the
ps list?
In my previous post I wrote that I started crond up after logging on as root
and I could see it in the ps listing, but even though I saw it my crontabs
were not doing anything. The problem was 1) the crontabs were wrong and
2) possibly a conflict between running two crond tasks (visible and invisible)
Can anyone shed light on this?
As a side issue, I also installed the lpr/lpd package the other day. It works,
but I don't see the lpd daemon either. What is going on?
