Subject: newspak-1.3 release real-soon-now [long...]
Date: 14 Feb 1993 06:21:48 GMT

I thought I'd let people know in case they're interested that there
will be a new release of 'newspak' before the end of the month.

For those who don't know, 'newspak' is an assortment of USENET-news
related stuff for Linux. It also serves as the news goodies in
versions of SLS from 0.98-5 to the present.

Changes from the current newspak (and news in SLS 0.99-4):

        trn - updated from v2.2 to v2.4
        tin - updated from v1.1-p4 to v1.1-p8
        elm - updated from v2.4.17 to v2.4.20
smail - still at v3.1.28 but with smtp and uucp built in
by default and also with fixed smail 'util' files

All are compiled with gcc2.3.3 and jump 4.2 for whatever that's
worth :-) rather than the 'old' 2.2d7/jump4.1

There will be no changes in the cnews stuff or in the uucp1.03 and
uustatus stuff from Ed Carp's mailpak (mainly because he's handling
the uucp stuff and I see no need to mess with the news stuff since
it works already).

Major change in distribution!!!!
================================
I'm not going to upload the binaries to anybody other than
Peter for SLS. The result is that you'll still be able to
download them in 'SLS-format' after he includes them in a future
SLS update and gets the SLS stuff on sunsite (etc...) updated.

This is actually no real change from your perspective, just maybe
a couple days lag in time at the savings of *not* having the
same stuff in multiple places by different names on the ftp sites.

Also, I'm no longer going to upload the entire sources since
it's a total waste to upload unedited sources to sunsite, tsx-11,
and their mirrors. GCC and Linux are getting so good, that there
are simply virtually no edits required anymore :-)

So far, here's the number of lines of code I had to mess with to
get them to compile with the gcc in SLS 0.99-4:

        tin1.1-8 - none !!!!
        trn2.4 - two !!!!
        smail3.1.28 - none !!!
        elm2.4.20 - none !!!

I will instead upload a small (!) .tar.Z file consisting of all
the README.linux files and the config files you'll need in order
to get the vanilla sources from "the usual places" to compile.
I'll also indicate where those 'usual places' are in case you
don't know...

Bottom line is that you'll be able to get all you need in order
to build them from sources very quickly and maybe this'll help
get about 5 MB of sources off the ftp sites that don't need to
be there.

Feel free to drop me a line via mail if you have any questions
or comments...
