     Please pardon my inexperience, but is there a site somewhere that archives
  all the messages in the c.o.l.* conferences? I have looked, but to no avail.

Try tsx-11:/pub/linux/mail-archives/Volume4 for current archives of the
Linux Digest, which is the email gateway'ed version of comp.os.linux.
It typically is 1-2 weeks behind, as I only update it periodically.
