Hello. Sorry, this may be kind of long....
I admit that I have only very limited *nix experience, so my first
choice to get Linux up and running was to retrieve the SLS package.
The installation itself (tiny) was painless. However, I notice some of
the packages in the SLS distribution are not quite up to date. I don't
know if this is the cause of my problem or not. My system is setup as
such:
Intel 403e 486/33 EISA
16MB RAM, no cache
Adaptec 1742 running in enhanced mode
Micropolis 1.2G drive
TSENG ET4000 based video card (Everex)
Logitech Bus mouse
I have, on the hard drive, the following partition setup.
MS-DOS 40mb (primary)
Free Space 160mb
Linux 200mb
OS/2 HPFS 500mb (Logical)
OS/2 HPFS Boot 90MB (Logical)
OS/2 Boot Manager 1MB (Primary)
I have installed Linux on both a Primary and Logical partition.
However, I have the following problems. When the partition is a primary
partition, and I issue the command:
/etc/lilo/lilo -c -b /dev/sda1 -v -v /Image
LiLo replies with "... does not have LILO signature." and aborts. When
I install Linux on a Logical partition, I get further...
/etc/lilo/lilo -c -b /dev/sda5 -v -v /Image
(note, the partitions move around because of their location when I
create them via OS/2's Fdisk, however I check with Linux's fdisk before
I proceed.) This time the command works, however when I go to boot to
the partition from Boot Manager, it loads to the display selection, and
I select VGA (space), it loads the kernel, detects the SCSI adapter, and
drive, and gets all the way down to mounting the file systems. I then
get:
MINIX-fs: error reading super-block
EXT-fs: error reading super-block
MSDOS: bread error 0x343
or somethine nice to that effect. I can only successfully boot via
diskette. However, I would, of course, LOVE to boot via my hard drive.
Any suggestions? Would LILO 0.8 work for me? What do I need from the
SLS package to replace LILO 0.7?
