I tried to ftp somewhere today and I got my first 'kernel panic'
sort of error message. It said something about not being able to allocate
some page memory, if I can get it to occur again I'll write it down. Anyway,
I've been running free quite a bit lately, and I notice that when all I am
running is a shell, init, and 3 getty's along with portmap, inetd and named,
I use up all of my 4 megs of memory. I have 8 megs swap, but isn't it kind of
odd? I have another machine running without tcpip, and with 8 megs of ram
which displays similar caharacteristics. It is only running the normal stuff
at bootup, my shell, init, getty's but no inetd, portmap, or named. It also
is losing memory somewhere...I'll have to check again to see to what degree it
is happening. Both machines are 386's with 99p4 kernel. The 4 meg machine
is running tcpip and the 8 meg machine is running the soundkit. That is
pretty much the only differences in the two.
Is there any reason for this?
