Subject: Installation Problem

I am having problems installing linux. I tried once again with
SLS 0.99.pl4-62, and still have the same problems. After booting with
disk a1, if I wait 60 seconds before specifying the drive I plan to
install from, everything dies. The prompt appears, and the message:

'child ??? died with code 0084'

I have replaced the video board, serial card, and drive controllers
with ones that I know are compatible with Linux. (A friend of mine
has the same machine and has linux running. So, I've been swapping
cards with him in hopes of finding the problem.)

The remaining parts of my computer are:
AMI Bios
Intel 386DX/33
4 Megs of memory (70ns)

as well as disk drives and a hard drive that I know to be compatible.

When Linux boots, the message 'WD8013 not found' appears. And, the
memory message says 2392/4096 available. (Before moving a jumper on
the motherboard to remove the remap hole, the total memory available
was 4480k, which was confusing since I only have 4 1Meg SIMMs.)

I had eventually (after lots of panics) installed an earlier version
on my machine. After running linux for a while, I would get 'memory
page' or 'memory corruption' errors.

DOS runs without any problems.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I am unable to explain
why linux refuses to run.
