I had a hard time configuring X windows until I looked at the
file in /usr/X386/lib/X11 called modeDB.txt. This file had
defaults for a wide variety of video cards and monitors. All I
did was copy the values for my configuration (a Trident 8900c
with a Tatung SVGA monitor) into my Xconfig in my home directory
and when I fired off X windows, it worked fine. Of course,
I later tweaked my settings based on the timings given in the
documentation for the monitor and video card. I did this with the
help of the two spreadsheets modegen1.sc and modegen2.sc, and
the README.modegen file that was in the same directory.
Perhaps someone who is skilled in shell scripting can write
a simple install script which prompts the user to pick their
video card/monitor combination from a menu, and then the
script can grep thru the modeDB file, extract the values,
and spit out a sample Xconfig file. It might not work for
100% of all cases, but would at least help out a lot of users.
