Subject: new Linux installation questions

after consulting the FAQ several times, I've got some questions
regarding my recent (semi-functional) installation of Linux.

but first, PLEASE RESPOND VIA DIRECT E-MAIL --- I do not currently have
a way to get comp.os.linux, and I've just now asked to be subscribed to
the mailing list, and with the UUCP delays, well, you never know.... I
might never see your reply if it only goes to the list. :-(

ok, now for the questions/problems. my apologies if these are in a more
recent copy of the FAQ than mine (got it in December or so).

first off, I keep getting these rather annoying messages written to the
console (whichever virtual terminal happens to be being displayed at the
time):
Unexpected HD interrupt # I get this one constantly
HD-controller reset # less often, but still annoying

anyone know a way I can redirect this nonsense? anyone know what's
causing it, and how to fix it? I'd just assume fix it, but if nothing
else, I want it off of my screen. oh, btw.....no, I am not yet able to
run X11 and use xconsole. :-(

second, I've compiled Taylor UUCP (read on for problems encountered in
the compilation process), and am having problems there, too.....
basically, everything is there, and I've got what I believe to be
working system files (I modified my UUPC system files based on example
config files from another system running Taylor UUCP)....but nothing
works.

problem is, when I try to force a poll using uucico, nothing at all
happens --- uucico runs and instantly exits. no debug level seems to be
able to give me any messages about what's happening or anything.....it
just runs and dies silently. same applies if uucico is called from
uutry...no dice. I do, however, know that Linux is perfectly happy with
the serial port, since I was able to compile an old copy of xcomm I had
laying around and get to the modem.

uuchk doesn't give any results that indicate a problem, but still
nothing happens --- uucico just exits w/o saying a word.

third, I keep running into programs (ones that I've gotten as binaries)
that complain about missing libraries. the single-most common missing
lib is /lib/libc.2.2.2, and there are a few other similar cases. I
understand this has been a topic of recent discussion --- anyone know
where I can find a binary for these missing libs?

and finally, the most confusing of the lot.... I'm using gcc233, which
I got as a compiled binary, and I've run into something really strange.
I first saw this while compiling Taylor UUCP. basically, gcc goes along
happily for a while, and then suddenly dies with a problem it calls
``critical error 11'' or something along those lines. once it dies, I
can try to compile stuff it was perfectly happy about a few minutes ago,
but it won't compile anymore. if you do a ``shutdown'' and then reload
Linux, the problem goes away, but if you simply do a ``reboot'', it
doesn't. any idea what's going on there?

in case it matters, here's my system config:

     20 MHz 386 w/ 4 Meg RAM
     100 Meg IDE hard drive
35 Meg or so is for Linux, rest for dos --- this will be
reversed once I can move the disk munchers (TeX, UUCP, and
        news) over to Linux.
     floppies are 1.44 Meg (3.5") and 360k (5.25") w/ Colorado tape
     drive also on floppy controller.

btw, while I'm thinking about it, anyone know of a tar or related
program that can access the Colorado Jumbo 120 (uses QIC-40 tapes)
tape drive?

once these problems are solved (and then the next stage, getting news
and mail operational, is tackled), things are going to be all smileys
here....but till then, I don't even know where to start on trying to
debug these things.

any help and net.wisdom would be most appreciated. thanks!
