One problem with adding patches to the kernel is that it is still
not possible to get all of the functionality. I have a patch to
setup.S that detects whether my card is a Diamond Stealth, then
uses the BIOS call for 1024x768, BUT this by default sets the mode
for 60Hz. Now i did a little "backwards development" so i figured out
how Diamond sets the card for 70Hz, but
a) i don't think i can legally let anyone else out there use this info
b) it has side effects that make it impossible to ctrl-alt-backspace to
text mode (although i think i can fix this)
The point is that even if we do add stuff to the kernel it will be hacked
up and only a partial fix anyway.
I suppose this is better than nothing, but it would certainly be better if
we could spend our energy and effort getting Diamond to change their
mind. By the way, are other vendors of high end video cards more open
